How do you avoid this? The first thing to remember is to vacuum often. High traffic areas should be done twice a week, and the rest of the carpeting weekly. The less time the dirt has to grind, the less damage it’ll be able to cause. Use a few slow passes on high traffic areas to get at the more ground-in dirt; it’ll work more effectively than several fast passes. For a more preventative approach, consider getting a walk-off mat for your home. The more dirt you prevent from getting on the carpets in the first place, the better.

Stains: The longer a stain remains, the harder it is to remove. If you go after a stain right away, chances are you can remove it. Most stains can be removed just by applying water and pressing it dry with a cloth over and over until the stain is gone. Remember, rubbing or scrubbing just drives the staining substance deeper into the fibres—it can even damage the fibres and create a fuzzy area.

Be patient and continue blotting until the stain is removed. If water isn’t doing the trick, you can try mixing in vinegar or club soda with the water. And if all else fails, you can try stronger commercial cleaning products. Just remember to test those products on an inconspicuous patch of your carpet first!
