Carpet Cleaners Share Winter Tips for Cleaner Carpets

Since the first snow of the season has dusted Vancouver, the carpet cleaners at Angelo’s FabriClean thought it might be handy to offer some tips to keep your carpets and rugs clean and fresh this winter.

We often forget just how much of the outside world we bring inside with us, and how much of that finds its way into our carpets and rugs. Leaves, rock salt, dirt and other debris can get tracked inside, leaving bits of ground-in particles everywhere you go. Even if it doesn’t leave a visible stain, those grains can wear down your carpet and shorten its life.

So, what can you do to minimize the risk? First off, keep lots of mats handy: outside the door, inside the hallway, under the spot where you keep your shoes. And during the winter you might even add one more right before you enter high-traffic areas.

Consider going shoeless. Get in the habit of always taking your shoes off. Invest in indoor slippers for yourself, or to offer to guests so they won’t mind taking off their shoes. It feels a bit posh, while protecting your floors at the same time.

Of course, other aspects of your life can be harder to control. Pets, for example, really don’t care about clean carpets, and might bolt through your house before you get a chance to clean their paws. You’ll need to come up with a plan that works for you and your four-legged friend. For example, put up a gate that keeps them contained on a mat until you can get their feet properly cleaned.

In the end, there is only so much preventative action you can take. Ultimately, you’re going to have to be more vigilant about your carpet and clean it more often. Clean it as soon as you notice discolorations, giving them less time to settle in. Regular vacuuming will prevent dirt from grinding away at your fibres, while regular spot cleaning will prevent stains from setting in.
