How often should you clean an area rug in your home?

One of the handiest things about area rugs is that you can roll them up and move them very easily. Unlike wall-to-wall carpeting, you have more flexibility with area rugs, and for many people that is a huge benefit. Of course, that also means they’re easier to clean, right? Theoretically, the answer is yes. But in reality, it’s easier to just run the vacuum cleaner over your area rugs and call them clean. That’s not the clean you want in your home, however, and it’s important to clean area rugs regularly.

A Deep Clean is Different

Depending on the type of area rug you have, truly getting it clean may not be as simple as it seems. Especially with a large area rug, you’re likely to need help with a deep clean. Why is a deep clean important? Not only will regular area rug cleaning remove dust mites and dirty spots from your rugs, but keeping rugs clean also improves the longevity of area rugs. Each time you have an area rug cleaned, you’ll notice the difference and probably feel a bit shocked by how clean it looks. Dirt builds up over time, and the slow change is not noticeable. But once you clean your rugs, you’ll realize just how bad it got!

Frequency Depends on Traffic

If you have kids or pets that track in dirt without considering where they’ve been, you should probably schedule area rug cleaning for once a month. But if you’re careful and don’t wear shoes in the house, you can probably have those deep cleans done less frequently and keep your house looking and feeling it’s cleanest.
