Vancouver Carpet Cleaners Share Tips to Fight Holiday Stains

January 10th, 2018 | by Angelo |    0

The holidays are synonymous with feasting. Beautiful chocolates and candies, red, red wine, nuts that are candied and spiced, the holiday turkey with all the trimmings, and, of course, the red, red wine. Of course, during all the revelry, some of the cheer will undoubtedly end up on your upholstery and carpets. Never fear! The Vancouver carpet and upholstery cleaners at Angelo’s FabriClean have advice on how to fight different holiday stains.

Note: always go a patch test before using any products on carpet or upholstery.

Potatoes and Starchy Food

The problem with starchy foods is that they tend to become glue-like and harden. First, scrape as much of the food off as possible, then flush with cool water (this will reconstitute the dried-on starch). Treat with a small amount of dish soap or liquid laundry detergent and put it in the wash.

Gravy and Grease

Start by applying a small amount of dish soap into the fabric and flush it with cold running water. To treat older or more serious grease stains, try some Lestoil or Pine Sol on the stain before laundering the item in cold water. Let the item air dry instead of drying by machine—if you didn’t get it all the first time, the heat from the dryer might make the stain set. Sometimes a second wash is all that’s needed to get the stain out.

Wine and Berries

Red wine and cranberry sauce are some of the trickiest holiday stains to deal with, but stain specific products like Wine Away with handily handle both. If any gets on carpeting and upholstery and you don’t have Wine Away, pour a small amount of salt on the area and let it sit. Salt acts as a desiccant, so it will absorb the stain.

Whipped Cream and Dairy Products

Flush with cold water, then treat with an enzyme-based stain remover before washing. Only use cold water. Hot water will make dairy products become gummy and more difficult to remove.

Chocolate

Shout stain remover is excellent at removing chocolate from textiles. Apply it and work the product in by rubbing the stained portion of the fabric against itself. Stretch out the fabric under cold running water and rub it against itself under the stream.

Coffee and Tea

Flush the area with running water to push out as much of the stain as you can. Then apply dish soap with a rag or sponge and dab at the stain.
