Vancouver Carpet Cleaner Explains Shampooing Vs. Steam Cleaning.

March 10th, 2018 | by Angelo |    0

As a Vancouver carpet cleaner, Angelo Di Pomponio knows there can be some confusion when it comes to steam cleaning and shampooing. What’s the difference? Are there situations where one works better than the other?

Whether it’s for personal or commercial purposes, all carpets need to be professionally cleaned at least once a year. And this isn’t just a matter of looks, but to ensure the vibrancy and longevity of your carpets and rugs. Without deep cleaning, dirt, dust, and other particles can become embedded in carpet fibres, gradually causing them to fray and break.

Shampooing is the oldest method of carpet cleaning and is very effective at treating heavily soiled carpets. A good shampoo should lather well, creating a thick foam that gets down into strata to lift the dirt away.

There’s actually a science behind the technique. Dirt sticks to carpet in part because of a static electric charge—like how a balloon rubbed against hair sticks to a wall. This is partly why a vacuum can’t always remove deep down, ground-in dirt. Soap breaks those bonds and loosens dirt, allowing it to be lifted away.

However, shampooing does have its disadvantages. Without thorough rinsing, any residue left behind can actually end up attracting more dirt. Additionally, carpets can take a long time to dry, which can make them susceptible to mould.

Steam cleaning effectively removes dirt by blasting it with high powered steam—without saturating fibres. It is safe for carpets—and no residue is left behind. Although it will still take a while to dry, the duration is shorter. However, for heavily soiled or stained carpets, it’s not always as effective as shampooing.

The best method for your home or office will really depend on the situation. Asking a professional carpet cleaner for advice is the first step. An experienced carpet cleaner will be able to advise you on the best methods to meet your needs.
