A good rug plays many roles: it’s a soundproofing buffer between floors, something to warm your feet, and a glorious showpiece that infuses your living space with colour, texture, and vibrancy. Unfortunately, it’s likely that stains and daily traffic will eventually take their toll. When that happens, the rug-cleaning professionals at Angelo’s FabriClean have a few tips to help prolong the life of your investment.

Rugs need regular care. It’s necessary to perform a thorough cleaning at least once a year, and possibly more in a high traffic area, or if children and pets are present. If your rug has care instructions, it’s important to follow them precisely. Consult with a professional if the rug is expensive or antique.

Testing for Colourfastness

If the rug is colourfast, you won’t have to worry about bleeding, fading, or any other changes when trying to remove stains. Make sure to check product instructions before applying anything to your rug. If you are unsure about colourfastness, always assume a rug isn’t.

Cleaning your Rug

Begin by removing any furniture that might be in the way—tables, chairs, sofas, etc. Thoroughly vacuum the rug to remove loose debris before using a rental cleaner. Remember, if you’re using a wet extraction method, it is vitally important to make sure the rug completely dries to prevent the growth of mildew and mould, which can damage the floor underneath.

Wet Extraction Method

Most home rug cleaning systems are water extraction units, also known as steam cleaners. These work by injecting a solution into the rug fibres and then pulling the dirty water back into the machine. Try to avoid oversaturating the rug, as this can damage the rug backing and cause shrinkage, discoloration, and odour.

Dry Extraction Method

The other popular method of home cleaning is the dry extraction method. This involves spreading a dry compound over the rug and then vacuuming it up with a cleaning machine. Although this method can work well, the machines and chemicals are often more expensive than steamers and wet extraction methods.

Renting vs. Hiring

While renting a professional cleaning system from a grocer or rental centre can seem cost effective, the add-ons and rental fees can quickly add up. Moreover, you’ll also need to invest in the necessary cleaners (shampoo, de-foamer, spot remover, odour remover, etc). Hiring an area rug cleaning professional is often more effective in terms of cost, especially when you factor time into the mix. You also won’t have to worry about damaging your property, and certain cleaners offer a range of other services that can be beneficial.

For example, Angelo’s FabriClean offers free pick-up and drop off for most rugs. They also offer repair, re-padding and re-fringing services, which means your rug will not only look better—it will last longer!
